This poster comes from the 1904 patent documents for "The Landlord's Game" - the predecessor to the classic hit Monopoly! The controversial history of "Monopoly" began in 1903, when Lizzie Magie created "The Landlord's Game," an educational game to illustrate the negative aspects of concentrating land in private monopolies. Several copycat variations of the game were created and marketed in the following decades. The story goes that Charles Darrow was introduced to Magie's Landlord game at a dinner party in 1932. He went on to distribute the game himself - with his own changes - as "Monopoly." Parker Brothers acquired Darrow's patents in 1935. They also paid Magie $500 for her original patent, since Darrow was proved to not be the sole inventor of the game.
