Thornton W. Burgess (1874-1965) was an American conservationist and children's book author. His first book, Old Mother West Wind (1910), introduced a number of animal characters that he would write about repeatedly in later books and newspaper entries. It is believed his writing career began after he started imagining bedtime stories for his young children - first putting them into written form as letters to his children, who were away visiting their grandparents. His most famous character was Peter Rabbit (briefly known as Peter Cottontail). Although Beatrix Potter first penned the fuzzy character, it was Burgess who truly brought him into mainstream kids' culture. Other characters include Jimmy Skunk, Sammy Jay, Bobby Raccoon, Little Joe Otter, Grandfather Frog, Billy Mink, Jerry Muskrat, Spotty the Turtle, and more!
Harrison Cady, the illustrator for all of Burgess' children's books, is best known for his iconic "Peter Rabbit" comic strip, which ran from 1920 until his retirement in 1948.
