North American First Nations people used the root of the sarsaparilla plant for many purposes, including treating heart pain, stomach upset, toothaches, and sore throats. They also used it to treat skin conditions like psoriasis and eczema, and to treat joint problems like arthritis. In the 19th century, sarsaparilla was one of the first flavorings used in soft drinks, especially root beer. The drink was popular in bars and as a home remedy.
