R. Buckminster Fuller was a futurist and inventor who studied how technology could improve daily life. This poster comes from images from his 1951 patent for a "geodesic" structure - and it looks strikingly familiar! The name "Spaceship Earth" was also coined by Fuller, when he published a book in 1968 entitled, "Operating Manual for Spaceship Earth." Both the design and name of Disney's structure were directly inspired by Fuller's work. Now, Spaceship Earth has become synonymous with Epcot's beautiful and iconic orb and the attraction it contains. After 26 months of construction, Epcot's signature ride opened on October 1, 1982.
