The Mermaid Theatre, which started in a large barn and eventually relocated to a beautiful, newly built Puddle Dock venue in 1959, was the first theater first built in London since the time of Shakespeare. It was, importantly, also one of the first new theatres to abandon the traditional stage layout in favor of a single tier of seats surrounding the stage on three sides. This program cover is from the new theater's inaugural show, "Lock Up Your Daughters," which was still running in 1961.
