In the mid-19th century, Eben Horsford, a professor at Harvard University, and his partner, George Wilson, established the Rumford Chemical Works for the manufacture of chemicals. One of their first offerings was a calcium acid phosphate powder that could help with various maladies like dyspepsia (indigestion). Think TUMS or pink Pepto, but 150 years ago! This product was also one of the key ingredients in the company's brand new baking additive; a development that became known as "baking powder."
